Mildred (Lewis) Kokko, 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 21, 2013, at Long Term Care, War Memorial Hospital. She was born on August 16, 1921, to John Q. and Agnes Lewis of Sugar Island, Michigan. She married Leonard Kokko (deceased) and they spent most of their 52 years together in a home they built on Fourth Avenue in the Sault. She was retired from the Sault Area Public Schools as lunch director, after beginning her career as a cook at McKinley School. She was an avid reader and enjoyed her Harlequin romances. She spent a great deal of her spare time, knitting and crocheting gifts of mittens, sweaters and afghans for her family and friends. She was a great friend to many and would help anyone who needed assistance. She will be remembered by her caregivers at LTC for her many amusing anecdotes and stories. She is survived by her daughters: Ann (John) Tarantini of Echo Bay, Ontario and Phyllis (Tom) Payment of Brimley, son: David Kokko of Ypsilanti, MI; grandchildren: Robert Tarantini, Echo Bay, Mark (Tammy) Tarantini, Blind River, Ont., Joel (Marnie) Tarantini, Sault, Ont., John Tarantini, Jr. Echo Bay, John (Connie) Payment, Brimley and Ann Marie (Ted) Williams of Marquette; sister: Ann Marie (Richard) Frisbie of White Cloud, MI. She has 16 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, sisters: Oliver Guillard, Vera Hilton, and Mary Noel Lewis (infant), brothers: Troy and Kenneth Lewis. Arrangements are being handled by Hovie Funeral Home, 558 Bingham Avenue, Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 with a funeral mass at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 26 at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Minneapolis Street, Sault, Michigan followed by a procession to Oaklawn Chapel Gardens Cemetery on M-129, Pickford Michigan. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to a charity of your choice.
